A yellow orb symbolizes the burning sun of 30 June 1960, independence day for Congolese people. The human silhouette holds a spear and shield representing the CMI as a protector and defender in Congolese cultures. The shield is Mingandji, a celebrated Pende mask, adorned with a Kuba motif for its nose and mouth. While Mingandji always sports a tuff of hair, here it takes a cogwheel form to represent ‘development’.
The spear here takes the form of a musical note to represent the important role music plays in Congolese culture.
